A shy, quiet girl (I'm like that too in real life, except for the 'girl' part), with not much friends, Hotaru Tomoe attends Mugen Gakuen in the 6th grade, living with Professor Tomoe, her dad. Her mom died when she was young, so Kaolinite (believed to be one of Beryl's allies) lives with her and her father as a housekeeper. Hotaru's classmates are afraid of her because she hurts them but doesn't seem to remember anything. Though Hotaru doesn't do it on purpose there is something that makes her do these strange things.

Also Hotaru isn't able to take part in any athletic activities because she will end up getting exhausted and fainting. Hotaru makes up for that weakness by having the power to heal, but even after she uses that power, she becomes worn-out.


In one episode, during her first appearance, Hotaru was sitting in a park reading a book, when all of a sudden she heard a girl (Rini, Chibi-usa) scream for someone to catch her hat. Hotaru tried to catch the hat before it was blown into the lake, and luckily she caught it in time. Rini then ran up to Hotaru and thanked her for catching it, when all of a sudden Hotaru has an attack, starts shaking, and wasn't able to breathe.

Later when a youma attacked them, Rini jumped in front of Hotaru to protect her from the youma. After the fight was over Rini noticed her knee was scraped, and so did Hotaru. She miraculously healed Chibi-Usa's knee and Chibi-Usa was surprised at what she was able to do. Hotaru explained to Chibi-Usa that her classmates are afraid of her because of her strange power. After that 'medical' episode, Chibi-Usa wanted to be Hotaru's friend. This was the start of Hotaru Tomoe's--or Sailor Saturn's--story. Another thing I couldn't get over was that Pluto [link] , Uranus [link] , and Neptune [link] tried to kill her after they found out Saturn was the Messiah, though Chibi-Usa tried with all her might to protect Hotaru from the three.
